Issues With Well Water Filters

It's a fact that many people receive their water from a city or county reservoir which is sent to their home through a complex system of pipes. However, there are numorous people who have other sources of getting water to the home, such as a well. If you are someone who has or is thinking about this method, water well filters are something you should be familiar with. It is most often necessary to filter the water you are getting from your well.

To keep you and your family safe, it is very important that you test your water when you first begin using your well and after that, once yearly . You should also test the water if you have done any kind of work on the well or put in a different pump. Because different geographic areas have different contamination risks, it is wise to check with your health department to see if they offer well water testing. If not, you can use the services of a testing lab, just make sure they are accredited before hiring them.

There are some tip offs that can tell you when there is a problem with your well water. If you have hard water, it will manifest by leaving deposits on cooking utensils and other items in which it is placed. Reverse osmosis and water softener are two treatments that may be required. Water that looks rust colored and has a metallic taste must be treated with an iron reduction filtration system. This is also the case if your water has an unpleasant rotten egg odor. It is not uncommon for whole house iron reduction filters to be needed by well users. If the water looks dirty, or like there is grit floating in it, a whole house sediment filter is the answer.

In addition to using water well filters that clean the water before it comes through your faucet, consider installing a countertop or under the sink water filtration system. There are cheap water filters that fit right on the faucet, and give you that extra sense of protection from contaminants when you get a glass of water. There are many companies that makes these, including Pur, Brita and Culligan to name three. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a secondary in-home filtration system in addition to the system you are using for your outdoor well.
